Samuel Waters grew up very much alone, in a big house with very few people. His mother had divorced his father when he was still a baby and she had been left with the house in the aftermath. Sam had a room on the third floor, while his mother lived on the first floor.
Before he had an idea of what stealing was, the urges to take things started. Things that were never big, or important, but he needed to take them nonetheless. Pencils, or crayons from other kids were the first things he took. He would bring them up to his third floor room and put them on his desk. As the stealing got worse people began to notice changes in Samuel, but by far the biggest was his eating. He went back and forth between eating less than a quarter of what he was given, or not eating anything at all. His weight plummeted rapidly, but he still kept to himself up on the third floor while his mother stayed on the first.
It seemed like Samuel was never going to receive any help for his problems, mainly because he never thought he was doing anything wrong. But theft is illegal and when Samuel was in a video game store he took a small Mario figurine. For the first time since he had started to steal things someone noticed and Samuel found himself taken by the police. When his wrist was almost broken by a police officer due to his low weight, people started to notice Samuel.
A police commissioned psychotherapist did a full evaluation of Samuel. The report labelled him as suffering from kleptomania, a possible eating disorder, and after Samuel told her about his deepest secrets, she thought it was very possible that he could be bipolar. The police suggested sending him away to Fenton instead of incarcerating the young boy, and his mother agreed.
